Grundy Light Exhibition 2015

Sensory Systems

Angela Bulloch, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Ann Veronica Janssens, Anthony McCall and Conrad Shawcross.

Starting this year the Grundy Art Gallery begins a major new programme of exhibitions and commissions incorporating the broad theme of light, which will occur annually to coincide with Blackpool’s Illuminations, which takes place in the town every autumn.

For 2015, the gallery presents ‘Sensory Systems’, a substantial new exhibition bringing together works by internationally acclaimed artists interested in the technology and science of light and how this can be deployed and shaped to affect our perceptual experience of space.

Whether through sculpture, projection or immersive architecture each artwork in ‘Sensory Systems’ invites a dialogue or interaction with the viewer, utilising colour, pattern, movement and other techniques to evoke a variety of spatial and sensory experiences.

Illuminations Archive Exhibition

Rotunda Gallery

Running concurrently with Sensory Systems, the Grundy is exhibiting images of original designs for the 1930s neon Illuminations, taken from Blackpool's unique and historic archive of working drawings, which extends across the Twentieth Century. The town was one of the first places after Paris and New York to widely display neon, a radical new technology at the time, from the 1920s and 1930s.
