Rotunda Exhibition

Simon Roberts: Pierdom

Blackpool South Pier, 2008

Courtesy Simon Roberts and Flowers Gallery, London

This exhibition forms part of an encyclopaedic national project by photographer Simon Roberts (b.1974, lives and works in Brighton, UK) whereby the artist has taken pictures of every pier in Britain. Coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the construction of the first pier (Ryde pier, Isle of Wight), Roberts will be exhibiting the images at coastal galleries across the UK including Turner Contemporary, Margate; Towner Gallery, Eastbourne; Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Quay Arts on the Isle of Wight.

Depicting the particular quality of piers as simultaneously architectural, historic and social structures this exhibition also points to their romantic resonances as walkways into the endless expanse of the ocean. Exhibiting at different points across the British Isles, another aim of this extended exhibition of the work is to generate a national conversation, highlighting their place as cultural landmarks, tracing history and national identity from the Victorian period until now.
